Toyota together with other Japanese car and motorcycle manufacturers: Mazda, Subaru, Kawasaki and Yamaha announced a partnership aimed at the development of diesel engines, informs Auto Świat.
According to ACEA data, in the third quarter of 2021, for the first time in history, sales of new hybrid cars in Europe (449.5 thousand) were higher than sales of new diesels (381.5 thousand). The declining share of diesel engines is also visible on the Polish market of new passenger cars.
One of the producers driving the hybrid revolution in the automotive industry is Toyota. The Japanese brand sold over half a million hybrid cars in Europe in the first three quarters of 2021. They accounted for 59 percent. all cars sold by Toyota.
– We are still expanding the range of electrified models, the latest example of which is the hybrid Yaris cross – said Matt Harrison, president of Toyota Motor Europe in October.
Ecological diesel will be built in Japan?
Meanwhile, as reported by Auto Świat, last weekend Toyota concluded an agreement with other Japanese car manufacturers: Mazda and Subaru and motorcycle manufacturers: Kawasaki and Yamaha, which aims to protect diesel engines from the ongoing expansion of cars powered by alternative energy sources. Diesel engines would be helped to develop new, greener and carbon-neutral engines.
The agreement was announced by Toyota’s boss Akio Toyoda, who a few days earlier refused to sign the climate pact at the COP26 conference.
Electrification by 2030
The announcement of cooperation for internal combustion engines, including diesel engines, contradicted the declarations of other car manufacturers. In recent months, they have announced a complete departure from the combustion versions of their models.
Audi plans to be free from combustion cars in 2026, Opel plans to get rid of combustion cars from its offer by 2028, and two years later another brand of the Stellantis concern – Fiat. Volvo plans to implement the full electrification of the portfolio by 2030.
