Driver may be charged in crash that killed 2 bikers, hurt 2 other

A driver who struck four motorcyclists in Sanilac County, killing one and injuring three others, could face criminal charges in the crash.
The investigation into the deadly August incident is almost complete and a report will be forwarded to the Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office for review of possible criminal charges, according to a press release from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office crash investigation team was called to the original scene of the Aug. 6 crash on M-25 near Stone Road in Forester Township. An initial investigation showed a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander driven by a 55-year-old Port Sanilac man was southbound on North Lakeshore Road when the vehicle crossed the center line and side-swiped a 1999 Harley Davidson Road King Motorcycle driven by a 67-year-old Shelby Township man. The driver was able to maintain control of the motorcycle and stay up until coming to a stop shortly after the collision.
The 2008 Uplander continued south after hitting the first motorcycle and then struck a 2020 Harley Davidson driven by a 55-year-old Berkley man. The collision caused the 2020 Harley Davidson to lay down on the roadway and strike a 2021 Harley Davidson Road Glide, driven by a 42-year-old Southgate man, that was traveling directly next to it.
That collision caused the Road Glide driver to go down on his side and separated him and a 39-year-old female passenger from Southgate from the motorcycle.
The Uplander continued south and stuck another 1999 Harley Davidson driven by a 67-year-old Warren man. That collision caused the male rider to be ejected from the bike and land in the east ditch. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. After striking this vehicle, the Uplander entered the east ditch where it overturned and came to rest on its wheels.
The 55-year-old Berkley man was transported from the scene by Medstar flight to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The 67-year-old Shelby Township man was transported from the scene by Survival Flight to Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The 42-year-old Southgate man was transported by Sanilac EMS to Deckerville Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The 39-year-old Southgate woman was transported by Sanilac EMS to Deckerville Community Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Royal Oak for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The van driver has not been cooperating with sheriff’s office investigators, according to the press release. He was transported to McKenzie Hospital by Croswell EMS and later transferred to an out-of-county hospital for further treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Helmets do not appear to have been worn during the crash.
The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.
