Thousands of Yamaha scooters have a dangerous defect that could leave riders stranded

Yamaha Motor Company has recalled some scooters because the engine may stall and cause a crash.
The recall involves 2,715 XMAX scooters from model years 2018 through 2022, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to those documents, “The camshaft retainer bolt may loosen and not properly secure the camshaft, resulting in an engine stall.” An engine stall can result in a loss of control of the scooter.
Owners are advised not to ride the scooters until they are fixed. Dealers will install a new camshaft plate kit, free of charge.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Nov. 20, 2025. Owners can contact Yamaha customer service at 800-962-7926. Yamaha’s number for this recall is 990184. Vehicle Identification Numbers involved in this recall will be searchable at NHTSA.gov beginning Nov. 24, 2025.
